Fall is right around the corner, and I can already feel the shift in the air here and the need to cozy up. The mornings are crisp, the evenings come a little sooner, and I find myself wanting to create spaces that feel warm and inviting. This time of year, I always start making small changes around my own home — and for my clients — to bring in a sense of coziness without doing a full seasonal overhaul.
Here are a few of my favorite tips for warming things up as we transition into fall:
1. Start with Seasonal Color
I love weaving in warm tones this time of year — deep rusts, earthy greens, and golden hues instantly add depth and warmth. For my own home, I like to swap out a few throw pillows or add a rich-toned throw blanket across the sofa. For clients, it might mean layering in artwork or rugs that reflect the season. Little pops of color can completely transform the mood of a space.

2. Add Cozy Textures and Layers
Fall is the season for texture. Think chunky knits, velvets, woven baskets, and even soft leather. I like to keep a folded throw over the arm of a chair, ready for a chilly morning coffee. Mixing textures creates that “lived-in, cozy” feeling we all crave when the temperatures dip.

3. Decor That Lasts All Season
Instead of going overboard with holiday-specific pieces, I like to keep things simple with accents that carry me through the whole season. Neutral-toned pumpkins, brass candlesticks, or a vase filled with dried stems can work from September through November without feeling dated. It’s timeless, versatile, and easy.

4. Nature as Inspiration
One of my favorite things to do is bring the outdoors in. This time of year, I’ll often clip a few branches or dried grasses and place them in a ceramic vase. For clients, I might suggest a seasonal centerpiece with fruit, gourds, or greenery that feels warm and natural. It’s such an easy way to connect your home to the season outside.

5. Light for Ambiance
Lighting is such a game-changer in the fall. I like to swap out brighter bulbs for warmer tones and use lamps instead of overhead lights in the evenings. And, of course, candles — always candles. Whether they’re scented with cedar and cinnamon or just simple unscented tapers, they add that soft glow that makes a space feel instantly cozy.

6. A Welcoming Dining Table
Since fall often means more time around the table, I like to add little touches here too. A textured runner, layered dinnerware, or even just a cluster of small pumpkins can make everyday meals feel special. It’s also a simple way to prepare for the gatherings that naturally come with the season.

7. Home Cooking
One of my favorite ways to prep my kitchen for Fall, is to bake my favorite (and very much loved) pumpkin sconce recipe. It’s family favorite and it just warms my heart to share it. In case you missed it, I surprised you all with the recipe last season! Get the recipe!

Fall is one of my favorite seasons to design for because it’s all about comfort and connection. Whether I’m styling my own home or helping a client create a cozy retreat, the goal is the same — layering in warmth, texture, and seasonal charm in ways that feel natural and inviting. Small changes can make a big difference, and now is the perfect time to start.
Kindly,
Michelle
