Award-Winning Kitchen Design: Behind the Scenes of Our NKBA 1st Place Project

Award-Winning Kitchen Design: Behind the Scenes of Our NKBA 1st Place Project

We’re thrilled to share that our Westport Beach kitchen project has been awarded 1st Place in Large Kitchen Design by the NKBA—a huge honor and a true reflection of the heart and soul that went into this home. Today, we’re taking you behind the scenes of how this open-plan, modern-meets-rustic kitchen came to life, from first concept to final styling.

1. The Concept Phase: Setting the Vision
From the start, our clients dreamed of a space that felt both elevated and welcoming—one that captured the modern ease of coastal living while nodding to rustic warmth. With large windows, high ceilings, and an open-plan layout, we knew natural light would be a key design element. We leaned into contrast, using deep tones and organic textures to ground the space and create a moody, soulful atmosphere that still felt airy and open.

2. Detailed Design: Where the Magic Happens
This is where the big ideas became tangible. We developed custom millwork plans, sourced materials, and fine-tuned every finish and fixture. The standout features? A one-of-a-kind tile backsplash over the range using hand-made Portuguese influenced tile, a nod to our clients’ heritage. We then layered the look with a custom-designed wood hood that added sculptural detail and a bespoke, artisan touch.

We selected dark blue cabinetry to bring drama and richness to the perimeter, while a dark-stained, natural wood island added warmth and depth. To balance the bold tones, we chose light countertops that reflect natural light and offer striking contrast. The mix is modern, a little moody, and beautifully layered.

3. Construction: Bringing the Design to Life
Working closely with our talented contractors and trades, we oversaw every detail to ensure the vision translated flawlessly during construction. With custom elements like the hood, tile layout, and island finish, precision was everything. The high ceilings and open flow of the home meant materials had to connect seamlessly from one space to the next. Every decision—from grout lines to wood stain—was made with intention.

4. Completion: The Final Reveal
Once construction wrapped, the kitchen came to life in full color, texture, and light. The large windows flood the space with sunshine throughout the day, highlighting the contrast between the dark cabinetry and the soft countertops. The tile backsplash and custom hood became instant conversation pieces—quietly bold and uniquely theirs.
