Hi All!

Another change of season is here! I must say, with the unexpected storm last month, I am loving these sunny days and (record breaking) warm temps. I don’t know about you, but a new season always brings inspiration to give my home a little bit of TLC. Whether it be freshening up, organizing or updating. We talk all about that in our post Refresh and Organize Equals Energized. But as well all know, this season is known for Spring Cleaning.

Are you planning on tackling the task this year? I sure am, especially after being cooped up in the house due to one too many snow days! If you haven’t started, or simply need a little bit of inspo…here are a few tips and starting points to get you going. Sometimes the hardest task is deciding where to begin. My advice:

– Begin with your own closet. Now is the time to say goodbye (donate) to the clothes and accessories you haven’t worn in years. Starting the day with an organized closet can make your everyday routine a breeze.

I love these helpful organizing boxes from the The Container Store –

– While you’re in the bedroom, now is a great time to give your mattress some attention. A quick an easy way is to vacuum all surfaces of the mattress, spot treat if necessary, and sanitize with a fresh disinfectant spray. While you’re at it, treat yourself to a new set of sheets to start the season off on a clean note. Side Note: The rule of thumb is to wash your sheets at least every 2 weeks.

Check out this article from The Strategist for a great source if you’re on the hunt for luxury bedding.

– Take it outdoors to dust off your outdoor furniture (minus upholstery) now that patio season has arrived. If your furniture didn’t come with cleaning instructions, the best bet is warm water and a liquid dish soap (preferably one without harsh chemicals).

– Time to clean that carpet! House Beautiful shared some insightful info on this task in this a great Spring cleaning article

“According to Paul Iskyan, owner of Rug Renovating, less-trafficked areas of your carpet only have to be cleaned once or twice a year, and every 18 months for a bedroom. For higher-traffic areas, the most often you’d need to bring in professionals would be three or four times a year, although once you see that your carpet’s dirty, you probably should have it cleaned for health reasons.”

Grousemont Estates Living Room Arch Design Seattle

Grousemont Estates

And as for your area rugs –

“Philip Costikyan of Restoration by Costikyan says you should clean them every four or five years — or every ten years if a rug is not walked on much. Over cleaning contributes to wear and tear. But you can treat stains at home with club soda. Stains caused by pets, coffee, orange soda, red wine, and anything with dye or an acid base are the hardest to remove, and the key is to act quickly.”

– True story… your washing machine needs to be washed! An easy and eco-friendly way to do this is with distilled white vinegar and baking soda. Run your washing machine with a full load of hot water, add the baking soda and vinegar and let it soak for an hour. Lastly, restart the cycle and let the water drain, and wipe it down with a dry cloth. Spic and Span!

– Don’t let the sun shine through dusty windows, choose a cloudy day to wipe the interior AND exterior of your windows. Why a cloudy day, you may ask? To ensure that the sunlight will dry the cleanser before you’ve finished wiping the glass.

Hi All!

Last week I introduced a new blog series focusing on self care. If you didn’t have the chance to read the first entry, catch up with tips on how to create your very own spa bathroom. A trip to the spa is a no-brainer option when it comes to needing a moment of rest, relaxation and self care, but it’s not as easy as setting an appointment, is it? We have to check our work calendar, check our personal calendars and not to mention checking the kid’s calendars! When we have to search for a moment of rest in our daily calendars, something isn’t right.

So, back to the spa bathroom – my solution to not allowing our calendars to dictate when we take care of ourselves. Spend time creating your very own spa and allow yourself to relax at the end of every day. Once you are all caught up on creating this space, scroll down to see my spa bathroom must haves.

Self Care Guide

A pretty pair of pajamas from Nordstrom Lingerie / Luxe towels from Pottery Barn (white is always a go-to for fresh looking and easy to clean towels) / I love Lush products (and their philosophy) – like this Calming Lavender Steam Fizz Tab and the Rose Jam Bubbleroom / Pink Himalayan Bath Salts from Herbivore Botanicals for a sprinkle of detox / For a little “soothing, nurturing, repairing” at the end of the day – Vitner’s Daughter’s botanical serum / Brown sugar and strawberry seed face polish from FRESH for a boost of radiance / Greenery is always a fresh touch in any room. The Sill is a monthly subscription of workshops and online plant shopping for all green thumbs, or want-to-be green thumbs 🙂 You’ll never have to question the perfect plant for any room! / Candles are a must to set the stage for a wind down mood. Try refreshing and calming scents from Archipelago like the Lavanda Candle and Agave Sage Diffuser.

Happy spa day!

There is nothing like a good day at the spa to focus on relaxing the body and mind. But who has time for a spa day? Don’t let that be an excuse! Here are a few tips to create a spa-like experience in your own bathroom.

A relaxing soak in the bath is the perfect place to begin your self-care spa day (or evening). Don’t forget the bubbles! A calming scented bubble bath or bath bomb can boost mental relaxation – like, lavender or vanilla.

Hello All!

As February makes its grand entrance, I am feeling the need for a rejuvenated spirit, a positive mindset and some much needed energy. So, that is exactly what I am focusing on this month. And I’m not stopping there! It’s time to prepare my home for bright and new beginnings too, and it all begins with a little “refresh and organize”.

Remember when we spoke about feeling Relaxed and Refreshed in the Bedroom’? Well, I’d like to recap and elaborate on ways to bring new life to your home.

Rearrange

This is an effective, not to mention very simple, ways to update a space. Start with what you have and say no more! Whether you’d like to give your bookshelf a makeover or your entire living room, start with your accessories. Lay out all of your accessories on the floor, organize them by size and color – this makes it easier to see just what you’re working with. Now, begin rearranging and refreshing! Here are 3 pro tips for styling:

  1. Always group in odd numbers – it is naturally more appealing to the eye. (bonus tip: give objects a little bit of breathing room to avoid clutter.)
  2. You want to aim for varying height and scale to appeal to the eye. A great way to achieve this is using books as pedestals for smaller items.
  3. Vary your textures. Pair metallics or shiny finishes with more raw and natural finishes.

Lake Sammamish Waterfront Living Room Interiors

Brighten Up

You can’t beat natural lighting, so consider removing distracting elements. If you have heavier window treatments, change them out for something lighter and brighter or if there is an unnecessary piece of furniture in front of a window, find it a new home. Take the leap and find that bold chandelier you’ve been dreaming of, or update existing light fixtures with modern pendants.

Bellevue Belvedere Stairway Chandelier

Quiet Time

Everybody needs a little bit of alone time. Give yourself the chance to reflect and refresh spiritually and physically by creating a dedicated quiet place. All you need is a comfortable chair (or sofa, if space permits) and functional side table – carve out a space in your room and make way for some quiet time.

Palm Spring Custom Sofa Ottoman

Go Green

Every room needs some life, and REAL plants will do just that. Houseplants not only add a fresh feel to any interior, but many can also improve air quality by removing toxins and increasing oxygen levels. There is no better way to literally refresh a room! One of the more common plants on the list of many is the Fiddle Leaf Fig. Yes, I did a happy dance too… who doesn’t love a Fiddle Leaf Fig!? They are known to provide high levels of oxygen and cleaning the air of allergens. This wonderful article from HGTV lists some of the best plants to breath new life into your home.

May you be motivated to punch a little bit of energy into February… and the year ahead!

Hi All,

I hope your holidays were joyful, relaxing and full of quality time with friends and family.   Can you believe 2019 is off and running?  It’s off to an exciting start for me and my team and I’m thrilled to share some news! I have been selected to participate in this year’s Design House Northwest  benefiting the Fred Hutch Cancer Research Center.   I feel honored to stand alongside some of Seattle’s top designers and transform this historic home.  It is an amazing project to be involved in and for such a great cause.  Design and construction has begun and the Design House will be ready to reveal and tour this coming September.  I’d love to have you follow me on the journey over the next 9 months as I share before pictures, the design process and behind the scenes of the Design House.   What room will I be designing? Pantone Color of the Year – Living Coral #16-1546

The verdict is out! Pantone has announced 2019’s Color of the Year, and we are so onboard! At Michelle Yorke Interior Design, we are all about embracing color and immersing it into our designs. Nothing brings more joy to a space than a pop of bright and cheery color, and Living Coral is the perfect tone to enliven a room.

What inspired the selection of this energetic color?

Vibrant, yet mellow PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral embraces us with warmth and nourishment to provide comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment.

In reaction to the onslaught of digital technology and social media increasingly embedding into daily life, we are seeking authentic and immersive experiences that enable connection and intimacy. Sociable and spirited, the engaging nature of PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral welcomes and encourages lighthearted activity. Symbolizing our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits, PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral embodies our desire for playful expression.

Representing the fusion of modern life, PANTONE Living Coral is a nurturing color that appears in our natural surroundings and at the same time, displays a lively presence within social media.

I believe there is no better way to introduce a New Year than with a color that symbolizes “optimism and joyful pursuits.” I went on a little pursuit of my own. In search of this shade infused into interiors, and here is what I found most inspiring…

Coard Board My1. Beatriz Ball Sauce Bowl / 2. Joy Susan Scarf / 3. Quatrefoil Lamp / 4. Faux Tulip Arrangement / 5. Soucher Marin Graphic Art Print / 6. Butter London Nail Polish  / 7. Nordstrom at Home Plush Throw / 8. Kate Spade Lantern / 9. Anthropologie Velvet Chair

Hi All!

As a Mom of 3 growing, and very grown up kids, I’ve had just a little bit of experience in the ever evolving design of kid’s bedrooms. It’s inevitable that their interests and tastes change as they mature. I’m here to share some seasoned advice on how we can help their space evolve with their ever evolving style.

Furniture –

Think classic and neutral. Black and off-white were my go-to’s in this delightful project – nothing speaks more bold and beautiful than the combination of these two tones. A trendy piece here or there can add a little fun, but keep in mind that larger pieces will be harder (and a little pricier) to change out as your lady grows up. Timeless defeats trendy in this case! Add pops of personality in the artwork and accessories.

Screen Shot 2018 12 03 At 12.58.14 Pm

Paint, Fabric and Finishes –

You will often hear the advice to go with a neutral palette when designing a “room to grow”. Scratch that! Nothing says you can’t choose pops of color and pattern to create a fun foundation for ever evolving tastes. In this project, I chose a soft shade of green for the ceilings and a subtle blue with a bold stripe as the wallpaper. In the bathroom, I went with a classic subway tile black and white mosaic floors. The wallpaper is subtle but adds dimension. Every room needs a focal point – in this case, a bold red vanity and a fabulous mirror took on the role. Sweet, yet sophisticated. Fun, yet classy. The perfect traits for a growing young lady.

Screen Shot 2018 12 03 At 12.58.29 Pm

Once again, don’t think plain jane when choosing fabrics for bedding and window treatments. Go with a fun theme that can “grow up” and be changed out later. For example, I chose a cute and classy equestrian inspired print. It is elegant yet so energetic. You don’t always have to design around a theme, but it is quite fun to inject your girls’ personality in the space she will be spending the most time in.

Screen Shot 2018 12 03 At 12.57.57 Pm

In a nut shell – think ever evolving tastes and styles, maturing personality and growing girl. When it comes to larger items, you don’t want to be replacing these down the road, so think timeless. Use accessories to keep up with the trends of the time but feasible to change out, such as lamps, throw pillows and artwork. Don’t skimp on the wow factor! Create a foundation, with beautiful wallpaper and eye catching color, that can host a change of theme down the road.

Kindly ~ Michelle

Hi All!

‘Tis the season where we open our doors to holiday visitors. It could be our neighbors or guests from out of town, kids home from college or an entire family reunion. Whatever the occasion may be – a Christmas Eve party or a simple family brunch – our front door tends to welcome a lot more guests this time of year. There is nothing like a friendly face to greet a guest, but why not leave a lasting impression when inviting them in. Let’s talk about giving your entry an added touch of love to create that lasting impression. Your entry, after all, is the introduction to the rest of your home. Let me just add, “a touch of love” does not require a home remodel! Here are some fun ideas for inspiration on how to welcome up your welcome.

Set the stage –

The entry should reflect the over all style of your home. What do you want your guests to feel when they walk into your home? For a calm welcome, organization and an easy flow are key. Tripping over shoes or bumping into out of place furniture is not quite what we’re going for. If you have a large enough entry for furniture, try use functional pieces. A storage bench to hide clutter, baskets, an entry table, or an accent chair to drape coats over. A coat rack or decorative hooks are the go to for smaller spaces. Don’t skimp on the pretty, but do think practical.

Add design elements –

Once you have set the stage, you can focus on the overall design. Once again, let your entry speak for the rest of your home. To add warmth, add a lamp or two – there is nothing like a touch of mood lighting. A rug is always a good idea when looking to warm up a space and add a little bit of texture. If you have a smaller entry, a lamp may not be an option, but don’t shy away from the rug. For that smaller entry, add a mirror to give the illusion of space. For larger entries, add some artwork to bring in some color and dimension. Let your light fixtures speak volumes by choosing a statement piece to hang from the ceiling. And no, you don’t need an ornate chandelier to create a statement! If you have the surface space, add some personality with a picture frame, a vase or a collected piece.

Create holiday atmosphere –

Now, create atmosphere and bring in the festive feels. Top of the list, scent. Candles, candles, candles. Nothing sets the tone than a seasoned candle. A warm welcome can be accented by warm colors – think subtle oranges, toned down reds, rich yellows and golds. Make it magical with crisp tones and touches of metallic. Break up the warmth with bold pops of green. Wreaths, ribbon, a throw or pillow on that accent chair, fall foliage in a vase on the console. Little accents like these are the perfect addition to creating a festive atmosphere without breaking the design bank. As Christmas approaches, swap out the fall foliage in the vase for mercury glass ornaments or magnolia leaves with pops of shimmer. Replace the throw with something plaid and change the pillow to something more jolly. Choose a wreath that matches your overall holiday decor. Red and gold ribbon for a traditional look, lush green and natural stems for a rustic look, or nothing but metallic for a glam touch. If you’re all about some garland, try accent the style of the wreath to keep it cohesive.

There is no need to rush your guests from the front door to the living room. Give them a chance to linger and enjoy the welcome into your home. Now, get to greeting!

Hi All!

It’s almost Happy Thanksgiving time! First and foremost, let’s ask ourselves a question. Do we really need a day to remind ourselves to be thankful and grateful? For me, every day is a gift of which I am so thankful for… the only thing missing is pumpkin spice everything! This is, however, one of my most favorite holidays. It is a time for entertaining! I love creating an inviting (and stylish) space to bring friends and family together. It’s all about warmth, comfort and a pumpkin here and there. This is what I have my eye on this Thanksgiving…

A chic wreath made up of antique gold magnolia leaves and purple berries brings a posh vibe to an otherwise traditional foliage. How about this… online shopping for dessert! Pumpkin cheesecake made to order! Every table needs a serving platter… why not make it the most beautiful empty platter on the table! I love the idea of dressing up a candle to add some WOW! factor to ambient lighting. And what better way to spice up the table than with some Fall foliage. Greet your guests with a porch adorned with heirloom pumpkins! These gorgeous plates scripted with the sentiment of the season are the way to go for a more minimalist look. Printed linens are a great way to add some fun and texture to a table setting.

Happy seasonal decorating!
