Home Sweet Home…this saying…it has so much more meaning and purpose in these current times our country is dealing with COVID-19.  You’ve seen and heard the saying a million times…printed on many different formats for decoration, greeting cards, you name it.

I have one myself, and right now when I glance at it placed on a shelf next to family pictures it is a reminder of thankfulness for having a home and creating an environment that is both functional and nurturing to myself and my family.

The definition of home is “the place where one lives permanently, especially as a member of a family or household.”  The word does not define the size, shape, the materials used to build it, or the price tag on it. Large or small, simple or elaborate – it is your dwelling place, your refuge right now, your own castle.  I would encourage you to take a few minutes each day and turn the news off, tune the noise out and simply be thankful for all your home means to you and all it is providing for you right now.

What a unique and unpredictable time we are living in! First, I wish you and your loved ones health and safety. Second, I’d like to offer a little inspiration and chat about making the most of social distancing.

As an interior designer and a mom I have realized how important it is how my home is set up and how it runs, and I am feeling this now more than ever! I’m sure you have been feeling the same way. And then add to the “Distancing” ourselves and sheltering in place.   Being isolated from the outside world seems like craziness, but it has become a reality.   I believe there is always room for hope and positivity. I’ve compiled a few tips and ideas to help make the most of this time.

  • Technology is amazing ! FaceTime calls or Skype is a great way to video chat with family and friends.  Send text messages with encouraging words and share photos already on your phone to share memories.
  • Gather in the kitchen and take part in preparing a family meal. Make that recipe that’s been sitting in your food inspiration Pinterest board and get the kids involved.
  • Challenge yourselves to a ginormous puzzle – not the kind of challenge that drives you into boredom.   Or family game nights with your favorite board games.

Better Homes & Gardens – Family Game Night

1. Family – This is the time to be thankful for all we have and to share our gratitude with others, even 6 feet away or more!

2. Kids – Create a daily schedule. I’m doing this with my middle schooler and it has been a huge help so far! This keeps them on a routine and gives them some predictability in a time where things can seem uncertain.  I include her and let her choose the free time activities.  We have found a lot of online resources for math, science, and even virtual tours of some of our amazing museums. Travel + Leisure shares a fun list of  12 virtual museums and Cool Mom Tech has an awesome list of online educational resources.

  • Need a daily schedule? Here’s an awesome downloadable Weekday Schedule.
  • Get crafty – Tots and preschoolers will love this and the ideas are endless. See a great list here. Don’t forget the tweens! Find a craft that you can all enjoy, I love these ideas!  And you’d be surprised what you already have around the house to use.
  • Make a digital photo album – This is a great activity to let them be creative by using an online source for photo albums such as Shutterfly, Snapfish and Mixbook. Not only are they having fun with memories of family time, holidays, vacations, it also provides them some comfort and is another opportunity for being thankful for all we have.

3. Home projects – This is a great time to get to those home projects you’ve had on your to-do list for months. March 19th was the first day of Spring – if you haven’t tackled your Spring cleaning, well, now’s the time!

  • Clean out drawers and closets – Create a box to give to charity and include your kids in going through toys and clothes to do the same.
  • Organize drawers and closets. For a little bit of inspiration, Container Store has ideas and an endless array of options for storage bins.
  • Paint project.

4. Feeding your Faith – I know there is a lot that is uncertain right now and that can create  anxiety for many people.  For me, my faith is my best go-to source for calming fears and anxiety that I could allow to take hold. Many churches are having online services and offering daily devotions and words of encouragement.  Here are a couple of my go-to’s:

  • Motion Church – my local church is fantastic and has a ton of resources online for adults and kids. Check it out – Motion Church.
  • Proverbs 31 Ministries – they have daily devotions that they are writing specifically for this time.
Screen Shot 2020 03 20 At 10.04.15 Am

5. Self Care – with a full house right now it’s important to get in some self care. Create your alone time, no one will do it for you and it’s so important.

  • Read a book – If you’re a reader, it goes without saying…pick up that book you’ve been talking about but have yet to start reading, or download the Audible app and pick up your earphones. If you need some ideas, check out this list from Book of the Month. Reese’s Book Club on Hello Sunshine.
  • Take a bath – Add candles and music to set the mood and create a relaxing atmosphere.
  • Have a phone call or  FaceTime call with a friend you haven’t talked to in a long time or lives a long distance away.

Let’s face it, White is classic. You can’t go wrong (for the most part) with white. Safe is another word you hear in regards to the color white. White cabinets are classic and will always look amazing! However, if you’re ready to go beyond white cabinets and you’d like to add a touch of the unexpected with colored cabinets, but you don’t know where to start – read on!

I’d like to share some helpful tips and inspiration to ensure you get the professional look of extraordinary when choosing your kitchen cabinet color. Whether you are painting them yourself or shopping for custom cabinetry in the paint color of your choice.

If you’re going the DIY route, do your research! Painting kitchen cabinets can be a bold move and if it’s not don’t right, it can be a bold mistake. What type of material are your cabinets made from? This will determine if they need to be sanded and ensuring you choose the right type of paint. Selecting the right paint finish is so important – you want something that is durable and easy to clean. You can’t go wrong with choosing a paint that is either made specifically for cabinets or one that is especially cabinet-friendly. Here are 2 can’t-go-wrong cabinet paint brands –

– Farrow and Ball Full Gloss or Eggshell Paint

Both are ideal for high impact areas and are easy to clean.

-Benjamin Moore Advance Interior Satin Paint

If you’re starting from scratch or getting ready for a complete remodel, then already finished and ready to install is the way to go! The color options are endless, but be sure to do some research before settling on one. Two things to keep in mind are the style of your cabinets and how much natural light your kitchen receives. To get your inspiration flowing for your future kitchen cabinet color, here is what’s on the trend forecast for 2020 –

Dark and moody tones grounded in nature are popular look – think blues, greens and classic grays.

If you feel like you may be making too bold of a move, an accented island is quite a trend in 2020. So, keep your classic white cabinets but bring in some color with a contrasting island.

When designing your dream kitchen you can have both beauty and durability.
Countertops

Kitchen counters are the most used counter surface in a home, so this is the perfect place to start. There are plenty of countertop materials, but you simply can’t beat quartz. For a gorgeous natural stone look without the fuss, quartz is the perfect choice. It is antimicrobial, never needs to be sealed and can resist scratching and withstand heat. If budget isn’t a concern, then it’s marble all the way! Marble is stunning and timeless with a little extra care and maintenance required.  Granite, Quartzite and Soapstone are other  natural stones choices.  Do your homework ahead of time to see what material is the best fit for your dream kitchen.

Sinks

When it comes to messes and clean ups, the sink sees it all. From hot pots and pans to liquids and food that can stain. Cast Iron has been a solid choice for years. One of the highest ranking sinks known for its durability is a stainless steel sink. It is can fall under a variety of style categories and its budget friendly too. It is stain and heat resistant. If you’re looking for a seamless look from countertop to sink, you can choose the same stone – like that durable quartz we spoke about. Natural stone is a porous material, so keep in mind that it will need sealing. Solid Surface sinks are also a favorite, they are non-porous alternative to stone, easy to clean and scratches can be sanded and polished out.

Faucets

Touchless faucets are all the rage, bringing a lot of pros when compared to a regular faucet – one of those being less water and energy waste.  And easy to use for the cook, no need to touch the handle with messy hands.

Kohler

Flooring

Engineered Hardwood can be durable enough to withstand heavy traffic from kids and pets. It can also be moisture-resistant – a great quality for those messy spills. Another great quality of engineered hardwood flooring is the ability to transition from one room to the next – a huge plus for open-concept homes. Be sure to test your samples to see how easy the wood will scratch.  Some species are a little tougher than others.  Luxury Vinyl plank flooring is a great alternative to natural wood floors. They are affordable, waterproof and scuff and wear resistant.

Have you ever heard the phrase “mixing metals”? Well, it’s a term designers like to use when incorporating more than one metal type/finish in a space.

When you hear this – “over the top”, “gaudy”, or “too bold” may come to mind – but today I want to show you just how to do this to create a cohesive look while using contrasting elements. Let’s get straight to it, here are 3 tips on mixing metals like a pro.

Combining doesn’t mean competing.

First decide which metal you would like to be the most dominant, after that you can consider the others to be accents. Keep in mind when deciding on the dominant metal, if you have stainless steel appliances, they may make that decision for you. The finishes on your appliance will also act as a guideline to incorporate the same or similar finish in other parts of the kitchen.

Screen Shot 2020 01 10 At 12.06.42 Pm
Stainless steel was the dominant metal in our Belvedere Kitchen, so we added warmer accents in the hardware and lighting.

Screen Shot 2020 01 10 At 12.12.48 Pm
Once again, stainless steel appliances dominated with black hardware accents in our
Cascade Mountain Home.

Blend warm and cool tones.

When you contrast your tones or finishes, don’t think opposites, think complimenting. Warm metals, like gold or brass are balanced perfectly when mixed with cooler metals, like silver or chrome. How do you do it? Consider a shimmering silver with an antique gold accent.

Screen Shot 2020 01 10 At 11.44.11 Am
Ashley Whittaker did it perfectly with a silver mirror above the fireplace and a gold accent on the legs of a stool. House Beautiful

Finishing touch.

Having said all of that, mixing types of metals isn’t an absolute must to complete a cohesive look. If you decide to stick with the same metal or stick with either warm or cool tones, varying finishes are an absolute must.

Marie Flanigan shows us how to do it in this gorgeous bathroom. Shiny gold on the vanity and faucets contrasts the antique gold sconces.

And how we did it in our Belvedere powder bath.

I hope these are just the tips you needed to start selecting metals in your hardware, faucets, lighting or accessories!

New Year’s Eve is just a few days away and it’s time to start prepping for another celebration. How do you celebrate New Year’s Eve? Fellow parents, do you stay up after the kids are in bed to watch the ball drop? When my kids were little we used to celebrate New Year’s at 9pm….if you’re west coast you can get away with that! Then off to bed they go! To make them feel like they are part of the big party, creating fun activities or a little craft is the perfect thing to do. Need some ideas? Here are a couple of my favorites:

-Set up a photobooth. This is something they will love to help with and it will surely keep them busy throughout the evening. How to set up your photobooth.

Screen Shot 2019 12 20 At 12.26.41 Pm

-Make holiday crackers. Another activity they can take part in and enjoy during the celebration. See the easy instructions here.

For more fun ideas, read ‘14 Ways to Celebrate New Year’s Eve with Kids‘ on Today’s Parent. And if you are a local to Seattle, check out some fun events happening in our area! Like ‘Ring it in‘ The kids will thank you later!

And finally, let’s talk about some resolutions, or as I like to call it, goal setting… and I won’t be doing it alone – I am including the kids! It is so important for us as parents to teach our children how to set goals and the benefits of achieving those goals. How do we do that? Well, I took to some reading and spent some quiet time getting inspired on ways to put some excitement into goal-setting for the kids. It all starts with fun!

One of my favorites is the Family Bucket List. Gather around the kitchen table with paper and markers (why not make them fun colors while you’re at it) and begin brainstorming as a family. Discuss what you would like to do, see, experience and achieve over throughout the year, make a list and hang it up somewhere everyone will see on a daily basis. This is a great way to create memories through experience and find more reasons for family bonding.

For more ideas, check out this article from Big Life Journal. It is super fun and so inspirational!

Happy New Year, happy parents!

Are you also counting down the days to Christmas? I am so excited to have my family and friends come together and celebrate this wonderful time of year. Dinner aside, gathering around the table is such a special time during the holidays. It truly is one of my favorite things at Christmas – merry conversation and laughter with a lot of memories shared and stories told.

So, it’s time to set the table and get ready! If you are playing host or hostess to Christmas dinner or a holiday party, here are some Of my favorite styles and inspiring ideas on how to get that table prepped and ready for entertaining.

Incorporating the classic tartan trend – the one that never goes out of style – is the perfect way to keep it traditional with a pop of what’s hot this season. I love this whimsical dinner set from Williams Sonoma.

For a less traditional palette of reds and greens, opt for a winter wonderland look. Add some festive prints to finish the look, like these sweet ‘Home for Christmas‘ placemats, linens and traditional Christmas crackers from British designer Sophie Allport. For US shoppers, get your hands on some of her fabulous homeware products here.

For a rustic look, bring in some buffalo check. Yes, it’s trending! You don’t have to go overboard with the pattern, table runners are a perfect way to incorporate just the right amount. I love the look of 3 table runners, like MesaDAmore created.

The table runners are available on their Etsy Shop.

Are you feeling inspired to set your table, or has it already been set? I would love to hear all about your festive tablescape!

Happy Holidays!

Winter is near and it’s time for Christmas to take over. Then again, is it really? If you were following our Holiday Prep series, you may have already finished your menu, your gift shopping and your decorating. If not, don’t panic! Take a deep breath, sit down with a cup of coffee or hot tea, and begin writing a list. It is so easy to lose our routine of self-care during this season, it’s all about giving, hosting, traveling and hopefully relaxing. I am here to remind you that taking care of you is most important. Here are 5 tips and a self-care shopping guide to ensure you have the inspiration to get back to some much needed self-care.

1. If the sun is out, get out! Soak up some Vitamin-D to get those good feelings moving. No sun, no problem. Find a good supplement to take during these cloudy months.

2. Treat yourself to a good moisturizer and keep your skin hydrated. Why “treat” yourself, because you deserve gifting yourself something a little special makes all the difference.

3. Don’t let your exercise routine fall to the wayside. Yes, there may be a time crunch or the seasonal schedule change may not allow a trip to the gym, but there is always a quiet corner in your home for a little bit of stretching and meditation.

4. Get cozy and relax. There is no better time of the year than this to wrap up under a warm blanket with a cup of tea and enjoy some family time, or a little bit of Netflix.

5. Embrace the beauty of Winter. It may be gray, wet and cloudy, or dirty and slushy where you are, but don’t look past the beauty these chilly months bring. I love the suggestion from Thrive Global -“Commit to taking a winter photo a day for a week, a month or all of winter. Play with photo filter apps. Notice how looking at winter with an artistic eye can shift your thoughts and feelings about the day.”

Winter Self Care Guide 2

Bundle up with a cozy throw from Williams-Sonoma | Stay moisturized with Clinique iD  | Tea for two, because a chat with a friend is sometimes the best soul food. | Can’t make it to the gym? Here’s an app that leaves you no excuses. Gixo. | Something for a little vitamin d3 boost. | Stay hydrated. It’s easy to forget when you’re cold and staying fueled with hot drinks, but for the sake of your skin and your health, keep the water close by. If you need a reminder… guess what?… there’s an app (and a bottle) for that!

Happy Winter Self!

Hi all,

It’s our final post from our Holiday Prep Series. So, we’ve made our lists, finalized decorations, prepped our gift wrap stations and made our gift list. Now, it’s time to get our meal planning on! Are you sticking with the family traditional meal, or setting new traditions with new dishes? Whatever it may be, it’s never too early to start prepping. Here are a few tips to get you ahead of the grocery game and leave no room for rushing when it comes down to cooking.

1. Stock the pantry with essentials. Consider what dishes you will be making or desserts you will be baking and pick up the non perishable items in advance. Flour, sugars, baking powder/soda, spices, canned foods and frozen goods, etc. No one likes standing in long in mile long checkout lines during the holidays for a mere bag of flour! Here’s a list of pantry essentials to help you remember the must-haves.

El 17 10041694 Elfa 6ft White Birch

2. Once you’ve finalized your meals, take inventory of your pots, pans and serving dishes. Make sure you have one for each dish on the menu, otherwise now might be a good time to borrow or buy! Like that set of Le Creuset collection you’ve had on your wishlist.

3. Cook ahead, for last minute holiday guests or a pre-made meal that isn’t takeout when you want to focus on gift wrapping or family game night. Need some ideas, or 150 ideas? Taste of Home has some great suggestions.

4. Schedule a baking day. Years ago I started a tradition of taking a work day off for a full baking day with a girlfriend.  Kids are in school, husband is at work, turn up the Christmas music and bake away! So much more fun with a good friend. And, we each plan ahead with a few favorite recipes, bring all the ingredients and not only bake together but share our baked goods at the end of our day! It’s a fun day we spend together.

Screen Shot 2019 10 02 At 2.24.41 Pm

Vietri

5.  Calendar time block – block out the time on your calendar on which days you will accomplish these tasks.  The tricky part…sticking to it! I know I struggle with this.  But honor yourself and stick to your schedule and you’ll be much happier when you are on track with the prep and stress free! Or at least stress reduced, we’ll aim for that!

Gold Ipad Beside Stylus 768473

6. Then create a cooking schedule for the day. Make an hour by hour list of what needs to be cooked and in what order it needs to be cooked. When to prep veggies, what time to put the turkey in the oven, how long will it take bake your sides, etc. This is also a great way to delegate tasks to your kitchen helpers.

7. A final, and very important piece of advice – don’t hesitate to go with a pre-made dish or two. Whole Foods has some delicious options. Not baking from scratch will make you no less of a wonderful host or hostess!

I hope you’ve enjoyed our series? Happy prepping and happy upcoming holidays!

Hi all!

And so the planning continues! Tis the season for giving and today that’s exactly what we are talking about. Gift Wrapping and Guiding. Does anyone else agree that the wrapping can sometimes be the favorite part of gifting? After all, it does make the first impression. Here’s a tip and some inspiring sources to get you going-

First, select your papers and theme in advance, purchase the materials online and have them shipped to you. Then it’s all ready to go! Some great online sources for pretty gift wrap – Hallmark, Papyrus and The Container Store. Second, start your wrapping early to save those last minute wrapping sessions and emergency trips to the store to restock your tape. Wrap as you buy!
