New Year’s Eve is just a few days away and it’s time to start prepping for another celebration. How do you celebrate New Year’s Eve? Fellow parents, do you stay up after the kids are in bed to watch the ball drop? When my kids were little we used to celebrate New Year’s at 9pm….if you’re west coast you can get away with that! Then off to bed they go! To make them feel like they are part of the big party, creating fun activities or a little craft is the perfect thing to do. Need some ideas? Here are a couple of my favorites:

-Set up a photobooth. This is something they will love to help with and it will surely keep them busy throughout the evening. How to set up your photobooth.

Screen Shot 2019 12 20 At 12.26.41 Pm

-Make holiday crackers. Another activity they can take part in and enjoy during the celebration. See the easy instructions here.

For more fun ideas, read ‘14 Ways to Celebrate New Year’s Eve with Kids‘ on Today’s Parent. And if you are a local to Seattle, check out some fun events happening in our area! Like ‘Ring it in‘ The kids will thank you later!

And finally, let’s talk about some resolutions, or as I like to call it, goal setting… and I won’t be doing it alone – I am including the kids! It is so important for us as parents to teach our children how to set goals and the benefits of achieving those goals. How do we do that? Well, I took to some reading and spent some quiet time getting inspired on ways to put some excitement into goal-setting for the kids. It all starts with fun!

One of my favorites is the Family Bucket List. Gather around the kitchen table with paper and markers (why not make them fun colors while you’re at it) and begin brainstorming as a family. Discuss what you would like to do, see, experience and achieve over throughout the year, make a list and hang it up somewhere everyone will see on a daily basis. This is a great way to create memories through experience and find more reasons for family bonding.

For more ideas, check out this article from Big Life Journal. It is super fun and so inspirational!

Happy New Year, happy parents!

Are you also counting down the days to Christmas? I am so excited to have my family and friends come together and celebrate this wonderful time of year. Dinner aside, gathering around the table is such a special time during the holidays. It truly is one of my favorite things at Christmas – merry conversation and laughter with a lot of memories shared and stories told.

So, it’s time to set the table and get ready! If you are playing host or hostess to Christmas dinner or a holiday party, here are some Of my favorite styles and inspiring ideas on how to get that table prepped and ready for entertaining.

Incorporating the classic tartan trend – the one that never goes out of style – is the perfect way to keep it traditional with a pop of what’s hot this season. I love this whimsical dinner set from Williams Sonoma.

For a less traditional palette of reds and greens, opt for a winter wonderland look. Add some festive prints to finish the look, like these sweet ‘Home for Christmas‘ placemats, linens and traditional Christmas crackers from British designer Sophie Allport. For US shoppers, get your hands on some of her fabulous homeware products here.

For a rustic look, bring in some buffalo check. Yes, it’s trending! You don’t have to go overboard with the pattern, table runners are a perfect way to incorporate just the right amount. I love the look of 3 table runners, like MesaDAmore created.

The table runners are available on their Etsy Shop.

Are you feeling inspired to set your table, or has it already been set? I would love to hear all about your festive tablescape!

Happy Holidays!

Winter is near and it’s time for Christmas to take over. Then again, is it really? If you were following our Holiday Prep series, you may have already finished your menu, your gift shopping and your decorating. If not, don’t panic! Take a deep breath, sit down with a cup of coffee or hot tea, and begin writing a list. It is so easy to lose our routine of self-care during this season, it’s all about giving, hosting, traveling and hopefully relaxing. I am here to remind you that taking care of you is most important. Here are 5 tips and a self-care shopping guide to ensure you have the inspiration to get back to some much needed self-care.

1. If the sun is out, get out! Soak up some Vitamin-D to get those good feelings moving. No sun, no problem. Find a good supplement to take during these cloudy months.

2. Treat yourself to a good moisturizer and keep your skin hydrated. Why “treat” yourself, because you deserve gifting yourself something a little special makes all the difference.

3. Don’t let your exercise routine fall to the wayside. Yes, there may be a time crunch or the seasonal schedule change may not allow a trip to the gym, but there is always a quiet corner in your home for a little bit of stretching and meditation.

4. Get cozy and relax. There is no better time of the year than this to wrap up under a warm blanket with a cup of tea and enjoy some family time, or a little bit of Netflix.

5. Embrace the beauty of Winter. It may be gray, wet and cloudy, or dirty and slushy where you are, but don’t look past the beauty these chilly months bring. I love the suggestion from Thrive Global -“Commit to taking a winter photo a day for a week, a month or all of winter. Play with photo filter apps. Notice how looking at winter with an artistic eye can shift your thoughts and feelings about the day.”

Winter Self Care Guide 2

Bundle up with a cozy throw from Williams-Sonoma | Stay moisturized with Clinique iD  | Tea for two, because a chat with a friend is sometimes the best soul food. | Can’t make it to the gym? Here’s an app that leaves you no excuses. Gixo. | Something for a little vitamin d3 boost. | Stay hydrated. It’s easy to forget when you’re cold and staying fueled with hot drinks, but for the sake of your skin and your health, keep the water close by. If you need a reminder… guess what?… there’s an app (and a bottle) for that!

Happy Winter Self!

Hi all,

It’s our final post from our Holiday Prep Series. So, we’ve made our lists, finalized decorations, prepped our gift wrap stations and made our gift list. Now, it’s time to get our meal planning on! Are you sticking with the family traditional meal, or setting new traditions with new dishes? Whatever it may be, it’s never too early to start prepping. Here are a few tips to get you ahead of the grocery game and leave no room for rushing when it comes down to cooking.

1. Stock the pantry with essentials. Consider what dishes you will be making or desserts you will be baking and pick up the non perishable items in advance. Flour, sugars, baking powder/soda, spices, canned foods and frozen goods, etc. No one likes standing in long in mile long checkout lines during the holidays for a mere bag of flour! Here’s a list of pantry essentials to help you remember the must-haves.

2. Once you’ve finalized your meals, take inventory of your pots, pans and serving dishes. Make sure you have one for each dish on the menu, otherwise now might be a good time to borrow or buy! Like that set of Le Creuset collection you’ve had on your wishlist.

3. Cook ahead, for last minute holiday guests or a pre-made meal that isn’t takeout when you want to focus on gift wrapping or family game night. Need some ideas, or 150 ideas? Taste of Home has some great suggestions.

Golden Chicken Potpie Exps Thfm18 39639 B09 15 8b 1 1024x1024

4. Schedule a baking day. Years ago I started a tradition of taking a work day off for a full baking day with a girlfriend.  Kids are in school, husband is at work, turn up the Christmas music and bake away! So much more fun with a good friend. And, we each plan ahead with a few favorite recipes, bring all the ingredients and not only bake together but share our baked goods at the end of our day! It’s a fun day we spend together.

5.  Calendar time block – block out the time on your calendar on which days you will accomplish these tasks.  The tricky part…sticking to it! I know I struggle with this.  But honor yourself and stick to your schedule and you’ll be much happier when you are on track with the prep and stress free! Or at least stress reduced, we’ll aim for that!

Gold Ipad Beside Stylus 768473

6. Then create a cooking schedule for the day. Make an hour by hour list of what needs to be cooked and in what order it needs to be cooked. When to prep veggies, what time to put the turkey in the oven, how long will it take bake your sides, etc. This is also a great way to delegate tasks to your kitchen helpers.

7. A final, and very important piece of advice – don’t hesitate to go with a pre-made dish or two. Whole Foods has some delicious options. Not baking from scratch will make you no less of a wonderful host or hostess!

I hope you’ve enjoyed our series? Happy prepping and happy upcoming holidays!

Hi all!

And so the planning continues! Tis the season for giving and today that’s exactly what we are talking about. Gift Wrapping and Guiding. Does anyone else agree that the wrapping can sometimes be the favorite part of gifting? After all, it does make the first impression. Here’s a tip and some inspiring sources to get you going-

First, select your papers and theme in advance, purchase the materials online and have them shipped to you. Then it’s all ready to go! Some great online sources for pretty gift wrap – Hallmark, Papyrus and The Container Store. Second, start your wrapping early to save those last minute wrapping sessions and emergency trips to the store to restock your tape. Wrap as you buy!

It doesn’t take a craft artist to wrap a gift, but if you’re up for mastering a new craft you may be able to wrap those gifts in seconds! Try the Japanese gift wrapping technique. See the tutorial on Better Homes & Gardens. Get some more inspiring ideas on how to let your gift leave a one of kind first impression.

Last week we started our holiday prep series with the all important planning and making lists. If you didn’t have a chance to check it out, you’re missing out on some good ideas get you prepped and organized for the upcoming festivities! Now it’s time to talk about that table!

Decor in any room at any time of the year adds personality and jazz, it sets the tone for the overall atmosphere of your home. Around the holidays, it truly does set the mood for festivities and entertaining. Table decor is a fun, sometimes forgotten way to turn a wonderful dinner into a spectacular dinner party. Here are 3 tips to get you started and some ideas for inspiration to create the perfect tablescape-

-Start with planning. The most important question to ask is how many guests will you have at your table? Once you have that settled, it’s time to take inventory. Make sure you have plenty of seating, dishes and glassware for all guests – it never hurts to have an extra setting or two for last minute invites. Do you have special dishes or silverware that need to dusted off and polished? Add it to your to-do list. Will you be using your own dishware? If not, start making a list of the items you need, or would love. BEFORE you go shopping, create a spreadsheet – itemize decorations, serving, glass and flatware you already have on hand. This will save you from duplicates and wasted time and money.

-Now that you have your table setting planned out and you have settled on a style, it’s time to go shopping. This is the best time of year to start shopping for holiday decor thanks to all of the those pre-holiday sales! To save time and keep it budget-friendly, take care of two tables in one go. Choose decorative items and dishes that go from Thanksgiving to Christmas without skipping a beat… or adding/removing items.

Screen Shot 2019 10 09 At 2.19.13 Pm

From napkins and tablecloths to cutlery and glassware, they can be functional and decorative, so think about incorporating them to create a cohesive, stylish look. Set the seasonal tone with whimsical pumpkin plates and a table runner, woven chargers and linen napkins for texture and cutlery with a rustic touch. Find this setting at Pottery Barn – on sale!

Untitled Design (10)

Beautiful Homes & Gardens

A centerpiece that can go from Thanksgiving to Christmas – magnolia leaves, fall tones and the classic holiday scent with cinnamon sticks. A blend of gold and silver are go-to colors for flatware and plates. Metallic anything always adds a festive touch. If you want your table to accent each holiday, an easy way to do it is to simply change out your center piece. In this setting, they kept the same dishware but added a classic holiday touch with greens and cranberries accented with a wooden bead garland for a rustic touch.

-Once you have nailed down the styling and setting, set up a mock set in advance and take a picture. That way you have all your dishware and decor pieces ready to go. Instead of focusing on decor, you can be focusing on meal prep or simple relaxing. An added bonus – having the picture, you can even delegate the set up to another family member and give it the final touch. My 13 year old daughter loves to take on this task….Teamwork! If you are serving a buffet-style dinner, do a trial run buffet set up. (Design tip: Keep plates and the beginning of the line and flatware and napkins at the end.) Add some decorative touches to your buffet table to keep it festive and cohesive with that fabulous table you just styled.

Hello all,

It’s October and the holidays are fast approaching! As a working mom I know how hard it can be to balance everyday life…and then layer on top all the “to-do” lists of the holidays! It can be overwhelming for sure! And then we find ourselves in survival mode instead of enjoying the holidays. I speak from experience for sure! So I have learned to plan and schedule out all the tasks and add them to my calendar starting in October. It’s never too early to plan and prep to take the stress out…well, July would be a bit early! Here are my top 4 tips to get organized and start planning to thrive during the holidays, not just survive.

Make your lists!

01: Meal planning: Start with Thanksgiving – if you are hosting, plan out all of your meals and write them down! Here are a few must-haves for list making and daily planning.

Untitled Design (10)

(The daily agenda note pad has space to write down your schedule, daily tasks, meal plan, and even your self-care ritual for each day (you know how I feel about self-care!) | Depending on the size of your purse, this fancy, portable booklet could be perfect to have on hand throughout the holidays. | A simple, pretty list pad with a magnetic back is perfect for keeping your shopping list in plain sight.)

02. Schedule: Block time on your calendar to ensure you aren’t juggling too many things on one day. I use Google calendar, but there is an endless list of calendar apps to choose from, and let’s not forget the traditional daily planner. What can you get done in October? Here are 3 tips to get you going –

  • Gather up the family when everyone is feeling cheerful and take your holiday card picture. If you’re hiring a photographer, this will be a great time to check availability. While you’re at it, make sure your address book is up to date and have your mailing list ready to go when the envelopes arrive.
  • Freshen up the guest room and stock up the guest bath with fresh towels and toiletries.
  • Buy your baking staples like, flour, granulated and brown sugar, vanilla extract, baking powder and baking soda.

03. Shopping: Hostess gifts – Anticipate how many parties or events you may have and order a handful of gifts to have on hand. Gift list – Start a list of who all you plan to buy for. Is there is anything special that pops to mind when you think of that person? If so, write it down. A few gift guides I found and love – Town & Country’s ‘20 Adorable Holiday Hostess Gift Ideas‘,  Good House Keeping’s ‘32 Unique Hostess Gifts That Work for Any and Every Occasion‘ and House Beautiful’s ‘27 Amazing Hostess Gifts That Work For Any Party and Budget

Town & Country

04. Decorate: Do you have all your decorations from last year? Is there anything you need to add? Go ahead and get those purchases done now. Most retailers have their holiday decor out right after Labor Day it seems! Yes, it may seem early, but make those purchases before all of the good stuff is gone! For gorgeous decor, trendy or traditional, Pottery Barn’s Holiday Shop is always a win!

Hi All,

It’s color crush time! This months’ crush is Sherwin-Williams’ 2020 Color of the Year – Naval. Yes, you read that correctly… 2020! What a bold start to a new decade with this deep blue hue, a navy like you’ve never seen before. This color is said to be all about embracing a fresh start with color –

“2020 is an empowering year of change that focuses on bringing your best self into the new decade. The next 10 years pave the way for wellness of the mind, body and soul – a clean palette for self-nurturance.”

As a designer who is extremely fond of color and a woman who believes in the importance of self-care, I am all about the inspiration behind this beautiful color. In the words Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams:

“The use of color in interior design is changing, it’s not just about what a space looks like anymore, but how it makes you feel. People want to feel grounded and inspired to pursue their mental, physical and emotional well-being. Naval is reminiscent of the night sky, which people have looked to for centuries for guidance, as a muse and as a reminder to live more mindfully.”

Who else is already in love with this strong shade of blue? Here is a curation of items I discovered that are representing this shade.

Happy Fall! Can anyone out there agree with me that Fall is a most wonderful time of year? The chill seems to make everyone a little more cheerful. The temps are cooling down, throws are always a good idea, pumpkin spice everything, and orange is everyone’s favorite color. The trends are changing with the season, so it’s a great time to make some changes around the house – or in front.

Last week we spoke about how to create a warm welcome for the busy woman, today we’re talking about creating a warm Fall welcome on your front porch. Here is some insight on the season’s trends and some ideas on how to bring them home. If you’re not into following trends, you really can’t beat traditional seasonal decor that simple never goes out of style. Let’s get straight to it!
