Hi All,

I hope your holidays were joyful, relaxing and full of quality time with friends and family.   Can you believe 2019 is off and running?  It’s off to an exciting start for me and my team and I’m thrilled to share some news! I have been selected to participate in this year’s Design House Northwest  benefiting the Fred Hutch Cancer Research Center.   I feel honored to stand alongside some of Seattle’s top designers and transform this historic home.  It is an amazing project to be involved in and for such a great cause.  Design and construction has begun and the Design House will be ready to reveal and tour this coming September.  I’d love to have you follow me on the journey over the next 9 months as I share before pictures, the design process and behind the scenes of the Design House.   What room will I be designing? I will reveal that very soon!

Pantone Color of the Year – Living Coral #16-1546

The verdict is out! Pantone has announced 2019’s Color of the Year, and we are so onboard! At Michelle Yorke Interior Design, we are all about embracing color and immersing it into our designs. Nothing brings more joy to a space than a pop of bright and cheery color, and Living Coral is the perfect tone to enliven a room.

What inspired the selection of this energetic color?

Vibrant, yet mellow PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral embraces us with warmth and nourishment to provide comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment.

In reaction to the onslaught of digital technology and social media increasingly embedding into daily life, we are seeking authentic and immersive experiences that enable connection and intimacy. Sociable and spirited, the engaging nature of PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral welcomes and encourages lighthearted activity. Symbolizing our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits, PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral embodies our desire for playful expression.

Representing the fusion of modern life, PANTONE Living Coral is a nurturing color that appears in our natural surroundings and at the same time, displays a lively presence within social media.

I believe there is no better way to introduce a New Year than with a color that symbolizes “optimism and joyful pursuits.” I went on a little pursuit of my own. In search of this shade infused into interiors, and here is what I found most inspiring…

Coard Board My1. Beatriz Ball Sauce Bowl / 2. Joy Susan Scarf / 3. Quatrefoil Lamp / 4. Faux Tulip Arrangement / 5. Soucher Marin Graphic Art Print / 6. Butter London Nail Polish  / 7. Nordstrom at Home Plush Throw / 8. Kate Spade Lantern / 9. Anthropologie Velvet Chair

Hi All!

As a Mom of 3 growing, and very grown up kids, I’ve had just a little bit of experience in the ever evolving design of kid’s bedrooms. It’s inevitable that their interests and tastes change as they mature. I’m here to share some seasoned advice on how we can help their space evolve with their ever evolving style.

Furniture –

Think classic and neutral. Black and off-white were my go-to’s in this delightful project – nothing speaks more bold and beautiful than the combination of these two tones. A trendy piece here or there can add a little fun, but keep in mind that larger pieces will be harder (and a little pricier) to change out as your lady grows up. Timeless defeats trendy in this case! Add pops of personality in the artwork and accessories.

Screen Shot 2018 12 03 At 12.58.14 Pm

Paint, Fabric and Finishes –

You will often hear the advice to go with a neutral palette when designing a “room to grow”. Scratch that! Nothing says you can’t choose pops of color and pattern to create a fun foundation for ever evolving tastes. In this project, I chose a soft shade of green for the ceilings and a subtle blue with a bold stripe as the wallpaper. In the bathroom, I went with a classic subway tile black and white mosaic floors. The wallpaper is subtle but adds dimension. Every room needs a focal point – in this case, a bold red vanity and a fabulous mirror took on the role. Sweet, yet sophisticated. Fun, yet classy. The perfect traits for a growing young lady.

Screen Shot 2018 12 03 At 12.58.29 Pm

Once again, don’t think plain jane when choosing fabrics for bedding and window treatments. Go with a fun theme that can “grow up” and be changed out later. For example, I chose a cute and classy equestrian inspired print. It is elegant yet so energetic. You don’t always have to design around a theme, but it is quite fun to inject your girls’ personality in the space she will be spending the most time in.

Screen Shot 2018 12 03 At 12.57.57 Pm

In a nut shell – think ever evolving tastes and styles, maturing personality and growing girl. When it comes to larger items, you don’t want to be replacing these down the road, so think timeless. Use accessories to keep up with the trends of the time but feasible to change out, such as lamps, throw pillows and artwork. Don’t skimp on the wow factor! Create a foundation, with beautiful wallpaper and eye catching color, that can host a change of theme down the road.

Kindly ~ Michelle

Hi All!

‘Tis the season where we open our doors to holiday visitors. It could be our neighbors or guests from out of town, kids home from college or an entire family reunion. Whatever the occasion may be – a Christmas Eve party or a simple family brunch – our front door tends to welcome a lot more guests this time of year. There is nothing like a friendly face to greet a guest, but why not leave a lasting impression when inviting them in. Let’s talk about giving your entry an added touch of love to create that lasting impression. Your entry, after all, is the introduction to the rest of your home. Let me just add, “a touch of love” does not require a home remodel! Here are some fun ideas for inspiration on how to welcome up your welcome.

Set the stage –

The entry should reflect the over all style of your home. What do you want your guests to feel when they walk into your home? For a calm welcome, organization and an easy flow are key. Tripping over shoes or bumping into out of place furniture is not quite what we’re going for. If you have a large enough entry for furniture, try use functional pieces. A storage bench to hide clutter, baskets, an entry table, or an accent chair to drape coats over. A coat rack or decorative hooks are the go to for smaller spaces. Don’t skimp on the pretty, but do think practical.

Add design elements –

Once you have set the stage, you can focus on the overall design. Once again, let your entry speak for the rest of your home. To add warmth, add a lamp or two – there is nothing like a touch of mood lighting. A rug is always a good idea when looking to warm up a space and add a little bit of texture. If you have a smaller entry, a lamp may not be an option, but don’t shy away from the rug. For that smaller entry, add a mirror to give the illusion of space. For larger entries, add some artwork to bring in some color and dimension. Let your light fixtures speak volumes by choosing a statement piece to hang from the ceiling. And no, you don’t need an ornate chandelier to create a statement! If you have the surface space, add some personality with a picture frame, a vase or a collected piece.

Create holiday atmosphere –

Now, create atmosphere and bring in the festive feels. Top of the list, scent. Candles, candles, candles. Nothing sets the tone than a seasoned candle. A warm welcome can be accented by warm colors – think subtle oranges, toned down reds, rich yellows and golds. Make it magical with crisp tones and touches of metallic. Break up the warmth with bold pops of green. Wreaths, ribbon, a throw or pillow on that accent chair, fall foliage in a vase on the console. Little accents like these are the perfect addition to creating a festive atmosphere without breaking the design bank. As Christmas approaches, swap out the fall foliage in the vase for mercury glass ornaments or magnolia leaves with pops of shimmer. Replace the throw with something plaid and change the pillow to something more jolly. Choose a wreath that matches your overall holiday decor. Red and gold ribbon for a traditional look, lush green and natural stems for a rustic look, or nothing but metallic for a glam touch. If you’re all about some garland, try accent the style of the wreath to keep it cohesive.

There is no need to rush your guests from the front door to the living room. Give them a chance to linger and enjoy the welcome into your home. Now, get to greeting!

Hi All!

It’s almost Happy Thanksgiving time! First and foremost, let’s ask ourselves a question. Do we really need a day to remind ourselves to be thankful and grateful? For me, every day is a gift of which I am so thankful for… the only thing missing is pumpkin spice everything! This is, however, one of my most favorite holidays. It is a time for entertaining! I love creating an inviting (and stylish) space to bring friends and family together. It’s all about warmth, comfort and a pumpkin here and there. This is what I have my eye on this Thanksgiving…

A chic wreath made up of antique gold magnolia leaves and purple berries brings a posh vibe to an otherwise traditional foliage. How about this… online shopping for dessert! Pumpkin cheesecake made to order! Every table needs a serving platter… why not make it the most beautiful empty platter on the table! I love the idea of dressing up a candle to add some WOW! factor to ambient lighting. And what better way to spice up the table than with some Fall foliage. Greet your guests with a porch adorned with heirloom pumpkins! These gorgeous plates scripted with the sentiment of the season are the way to go for a more minimalist look. Printed linens are a great way to add some fun and texture to a table setting.

Happy seasonal decorating!

Hi All,

The days are getting darker and temps are getting cooler – it’s the perfect time of year to hunker down and switch off. Nothing sounds better at the end of the day than curling up under the covers and staying cozy, and in the morning, staying in bed for just a few more snooze alarms. It’s so easy to get stuck into this routine and before we know it, we are tired and drowsy all day.

We have heard of the many ways we can help prevent this unhealthy routine – shut down all things technology, stretch it out, drink more water, meditate, etc. I agree with these positive steps to encourage a more healthy start and end of the day, but let’s take a moment to talk about the changes we can make in our homes to motivate more relaxing and refreshing atmosphere through our surroundings.

Lighting —

A necessity, of course. But lighting is so much more – it has a powerful effect on our emotional and mental health. Whether it be natural or man made, lighting can add a much needed boost of energy. We know a lot about this in our grey and rainy climate. It is known that warmer lighting is better for rest and relaxation, whereas brighter and cooler light can help you feel more alert. How do we achieve both in one room? An easy option is choosing the right bulb. Philips offers a unique bulb that works great with a dimmer switch – It is designed to change ‘color temperature’ from a standard soft white to a warmer, more amber-toned light.

Philips Led Bulbs 457069 E1 1000

Informative infographic from Home Depot

Colors —

Color is a powerful element in a home. Vibrant hues can spark creativity, energy and productivity but the bedroom is not the ideal place to use them. The bedroom is a retreat, a space for more a more peaceful and relaxed atmosphere. Choose more calming and natural tones – like subtle blues, soothing greens and soft grays. Having said that, it’s ultimately most important to go with what makes you feel good and what fits your personality.  If you need bright vibrant colors to get you going in the morning then go with that. Just use dimmers to control the mood in the evening.

Screen Shot 2018 10 23 At 9.13.28 Am

The Psychology of Color article from Benjamin Moore has some very insightful information on color and emotions.

Scent —

Candles are always a great go-to when it comes to setting the mood. You can choose the right scents to help promote relaxation. So many people are turning to essential oils and they can be more than drops or misters. There are an array of beautiful diffusers that can add an extra touch of decor. And if you’re looking for the right scent to help you feel relaxed and refreshed, here are a few –

Lavender – Calming properties to help control stress and

Jasmine – Like lavender, it is calming gives a boost of energy

Citrus – Once again, calming qualities with a little confidence boost

Screen Shot 2018 10 24 At 2.33.20 Pm

Allure shared an article, “11 of the Best Essential Oil Diffusers to Make Your Home Smell Amazing“, it’s so worth the read! I love this one from Homedics! Not only does it diffuse your favorite scent, but it has a built in library of soothing and uplifting sounds. | Macy’s

Decor —

Light weight drapery will keep the room from feeling too dark, especially when that natural light comes pouring in the window when you wake up. Go with soft, more subtle, fabrics and textures. Bold and bright prints can keep the eyes stimulated. If you like to wake up slowly and need all light blocked out, you can still use a light color or patterned fabric, just add a room darkening liner behind it. Keep surfaces and the floor free from clutter – don’t remove all the family pictures and mementoes, but do keep table top decor to a minimum. Adding decorative storage pieces can solve this in a flash.

Screen Shot 2018 10 24 At 2.19.39 Pm

A combination of window treatment styles is a great way to control how much natural light comes in. I love how Rachel Laxer achieved this look so beautifully with the a combination of sheers and a light weight shade. | Luxe Magazine | Photography: Emilio Collavino

As a designer, I am always seeking out inspiration. Whether it be exploring the interiors of shops and restaurants, viewing galleries or flipping through the pages of magazines. For at the finger tips visual inspiration, I enjoy a little bit of Pinterest browsing. Don’t we all?

Pinterest is more than a place to find the best recipes or trending craft projects. I find it to be the perfect place to spark creativity. Admiring can truly be inspiring. So browsing through the curated works of some of the most talented designers, architects, artists and trends can be all I need to jog some inspiration on an otherwise dull day.

While scrolling through my feed, I found my top 3 pins of the week…

Hi All!

Fashion Week at the Bellevue Collection has come and gone, leaving behind some “luxe fall looks”. This event is always a show stopper and brings so much energy to our town. The runway was filled with designers like Kate Spade New York, Max Mara, and Eileen Fisher. There was a  wide variety of styles – from tone on tone neutrals with plush layers, jewel tones and pops of bold color to pretty florals, touches of leopard print and a splash of shimmer.

The Posh Party trends from brands like Express, Zara, Banana Republic and Macy’s were sophisticated and sassy. With glittering whites, chic blacks, more of those jewel tones, and Fall’s favorite – plaids and tweeds.

I find so much inspiration through fashion…beyond the inspiring ideas of what to put in my closet. When it comes to textiles, textures and prints, the runway trends often spill into the design world. So naturally, Fashion Week becomes a hub of inspiration for me.

How, you may ask? Here is my take on this season’s fashion trends interpreted by interiors.

Halloween is just around the corner! Is your home frighteningly festive (I couldn’t help myself!)? The ideas and options are endless when it comes to decorating for the holidays. I have gathered a few favorites for the season – from macarons to ghost dogs. Enjoy!

A gift box filled with delicious Halloween cookies. What a sweet gift or party treat! Add a plate full of these pumpkin pie macarons to your dessert table and you’ll be the hostess with the mostest fancy treats! These scary, yet sweet, spider napkins will add a pop of chic to the dinner table. I love the idea of adding a little whimsy to Halloween decor – these cute cloches filled with trick or treating cats are sweet perfection. As a dog lover, there couldn’t be a better Halloween greeter than this life-size ghost dog! You’ll be the most popular porch on the block with that bowl of candy! Add a little atmosphere to the front yard with these solar pumpkin pathway lights and light the way to the front door for little trick or treaters.
