Hello all,

It’s October and the holidays are fast approaching! As a working mom I know how hard it can be to balance everyday life…and then layer on top all the “to-do” lists of the holidays! It can be overwhelming for sure! And then we find ourselves in survival mode instead of enjoying the holidays. I speak from experience for sure! So I have learned to plan and schedule out all the tasks and add them to my calendar starting in October. It’s never too early to plan and prep to take the stress out…well, July would be a bit early! Here are my top 4 tips to get organized and start planning to thrive during the holidays, not just survive.

Make your lists!

01: Meal planning: Start with Thanksgiving – if you are hosting, plan out all of your meals and write them down! Here are a few must-haves for list making and daily planning.

Untitled Design (10)

(The daily agenda note pad has space to write down your schedule, daily tasks, meal plan, and even your self-care ritual for each day (you know how I feel about self-care!) | Depending on the size of your purse, this fancy, portable booklet could be perfect to have on hand throughout the holidays. | A simple, pretty list pad with a magnetic back is perfect for keeping your shopping list in plain sight.)

02. Schedule: Block time on your calendar to ensure you aren’t juggling too many things on one day. I use Google calendar, but there is an endless list of calendar apps to choose from, and let’s not forget the traditional daily planner. What can you get done in October? Here are 3 tips to get you going –

  • Gather up the family when everyone is feeling cheerful and take your holiday card picture. If you’re hiring a photographer, this will be a great time to check availability. While you’re at it, make sure your address book is up to date and have your mailing list ready to go when the envelopes arrive.
  • Freshen up the guest room and stock up the guest bath with fresh towels and toiletries.
  • Buy your baking staples like, flour, granulated and brown sugar, vanilla extract, baking powder and baking soda.

03. Shopping: Hostess gifts – Anticipate how many parties or events you may have and order a handful of gifts to have on hand. Gift list – Start a list of who all you plan to buy for. Is there is anything special that pops to mind when you think of that person? If so, write it down. A few gift guides I found and love – Town & Country’s ‘20 Adorable Holiday Hostess Gift Ideas‘,  Good House Keeping’s ‘32 Unique Hostess Gifts That Work for Any and Every Occasion‘ and House Beautiful’s ‘27 Amazing Hostess Gifts That Work For Any Party and Budget

04. Decorate: Do you have all your decorations from last year? Is there anything you need to add? Go ahead and get those purchases done now. Most retailers have their holiday decor out right after Labor Day it seems! Yes, it may seem early, but make those purchases before all of the good stuff is gone! For gorgeous decor, trendy or traditional, Pottery Barn’s Holiday Shop is always a win!

Hi All,

It’s color crush time! This months’ crush is Sherwin-Williams’ 2020 Color of the Year – Naval. Yes, you read that correctly… 2020! What a bold start to a new decade with this deep blue hue, a navy like you’ve never seen before. This color is said to be all about embracing a fresh start with color –

“2020 is an empowering year of change that focuses on bringing your best self into the new decade. The next 10 years pave the way for wellness of the mind, body and soul – a clean palette for self-nurturance.”

As a designer who is extremely fond of color and a woman who believes in the importance of self-care, I am all about the inspiration behind this beautiful color. In the words Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams:

“The use of color in interior design is changing, it’s not just about what a space looks like anymore, but how it makes you feel. People want to feel grounded and inspired to pursue their mental, physical and emotional well-being. Naval is reminiscent of the night sky, which people have looked to for centuries for guidance, as a muse and as a reminder to live more mindfully.”

Who else is already in love with this strong shade of blue? Here is a curation of items I discovered that are representing this shade.

Happy Fall! Can anyone out there agree with me that Fall is a most wonderful time of year? The chill seems to make everyone a little more cheerful. The temps are cooling down, throws are always a good idea, pumpkin spice everything, and orange is everyone’s favorite color. The trends are changing with the season, so it’s a great time to make some changes around the house – or in front.

Last week we spoke about how to create a warm welcome for the busy woman, today we’re talking about creating a warm Fall welcome on your front porch. Here is some insight on the season’s trends and some ideas on how to bring them home. If you’re not into following trends, you really can’t beat traditional seasonal decor that simple never goes out of style. Let’s get straight to it!

Go all in on the Autumn palette and pumpkins –

Hi all,

Are you a business woman with a busy schedule and rarely find yourself with any downtime to focus on your home –  This post may be for you, ladies. In fact, if you are a busy stay at home Mom or work from home Mom with the same dilemma, this post is for you too!

As an interior designer with a busy schedule, even I find it hard to come home and focus on my home. Over the years, I have learned a thing or two on tackling this dilemma. One of the biggest lessons I learned in my own home is creating an entrance that makes me feel welcomed and so happy to be home. I want the same for you, so here are three quick and easy ways to do just that.

The front door- A fun welcome mat, pretty wreath and greenery. One, two, three… welcome home!

Williams Sonoma Home

The entry- Stylish storage in your entryway. Decluttering a space is one of the easiest ways to create a sense of calm in your home. Stylish baskets, a bench or functional accessories, or opt for a table with drawers.

The styled entry- Add some decor along with the functional storage. Depending on the amount of space you have to work with there are so many ways you can incorporate some decor to give your entry a designer’s touch. For large spaces – an accent chair or table (or both) and a lamp. For smaller spaces – a rug, shelf for decor, a simple piece of art or mirror.

As a designer and a busy Mom of 2 teens and a college student, I’d like to share some tips on how to create a beautiful home that will withstand the everyday life of a toddler or growing teen. If you are a parent, I am sure you can relate to the mess these special humans are capable of creating! From muddy cleats to sticky fingers, crayon scribbles to gatorade spills and the list can go on and on. The mess is inevitable, but with the proper design choices, it can be cleanable and preventable. Here are 3 tips to get you going:

Walls: To ensure you aren’t left with food smears, amateur art or mud, wipeable paint is a must. The glossier the paint is, the more durable and washable it will be. So opt out of the flat or matte paint you just fell in love with and choose a satin, semi to high gloss finish. If you are trying to avoid the sheen look, choose a washable flat paint.

House Beautiful

Fabrics: From my previous posts, you’ll find how much I love a good performance fabric. With or without children, you simply cannot go wrong with a performance fabric. Easy-to-clean and durable are the two words you need to keep in mind when shopping for an upholstery fabric. Don’t be hesitant to shop in the indoor-outdoor section of the fabric store, either.

Screen Shot 2019 07 29 At 12.05.04 Pm

Area rugs: Rugs are a great way to add function and style to any room.  They are also a great addition to a hard wood floor. You will be protecting your floors as well as adding extra durability. Choose easy-to-clean low pile, or jute and sisal rugs are extremely durable and a great way to add texture. Once again, indoor-outdoor rugs can be the most ideal choice.

Calm, composed and effortlessly sophisticated, Benjamin Moore’s Color of the Year 2019, Metropolitan AF-690, exudes glamour, beauty and balance.

“Metropolitan AF-690 emanates nuance, harmony and extravagant ease. Always adaptable, it softens to matte or shimmers with sheen. It’s neutral. It’s understated. It just is. This is color, off-duty.”

—Ellen O’Neill, Benjamin Moore & Co.

There is nothing like a neutral that says a lot without saying much at all. I have been soaking up all the inspiration I can find, and here is what I’ve fallen in love with –

Time flies when you’re having fun couldn’t be more true, as this Summer is flying by. I hope you are all enjoying the school break and squeezing out the last bit of fun you can this Summer, because it’s almost time to say our goodbyes – to those college kids! My hearts go out to all of the parents as they prepare to send their kids of to their first year of college!

Preparation for college can be frantic and emotional time. There is so much to think about when it comes to necessities, but I’d like to chat about the fun side of college prep – the dorm! I believe in helping to create a space that feels like a home away from home for our special scholars. So, let’s get straight to it –

What is trending? Boho chic, bold prints, classic stripes, and muted palettes to name just a few.

For the girls – boho chic is everywhere, bright or muted tones. Ruching, pintuck and texture! Wall hangings and gold accents.

Hi All,

The office is a space so many of us spend a lot of our time in. In fact, many people spend more hours in their office than they do at home. Quite a sobering stat, if you ask me. With all of this time away from home and the great outdoors, I think it is so important that we take the time to beautify our office and create a space that promotes productivity. Another fun fact, the more inspiring our work spaces are, the more productive we are. So, let’s kick this work week off with some ideas on how you can create an office that gets you inspired to be in and motivated to tackle that endless to-do list.

First impressions. Whether you are welcoming a client or just your lovely self on an early Monday morning, you want it to be a warm and inviting welcome. A welcome “mat” always adds warmth and texture. Fresh flowers or greenery add color and life to a space. I suggest taking time to do some research and pick an air purifying plant. Yes, they do exist!

Let there be light! Lighting is crucial in any space, but particularly in the office. You need functional light to work without putting strain on your eyes, but mood lighting is always a good idea. Place a lamp in a dark spot of the room, or select the right bulb to go in that beautiful lamp you would love to replace the uninspiring task light. If you have the luxury of natural lighting, then open up those curtains and let it in!

Domino Photo Caitlyn Wilson

And the anchor of it all – the desk. Function is most important when it comes to your desk, but that doesn’t mean we have to comprise the beauty. In fact, the desk can often be the focal point of an office, so selecting something on the prettier side is suggested. There are so many beautiful options for desks, but if you’re looking for unique – consider shopping outside of the office category.

Some of you may be saying, “But, Michelle, what about those of us who don’t have their own office to accomplish all of these stylish tips?” I’ve got your back! A few of these ideas may need to be run by your boss before fully committing!

Personalize your desk with pictures in pretty frames. If your desk space allows – add a small lamp to bring in some of that mood lighting and greenery for a pop of color and breath of fresh air. When it comes to plants, stick with something on the low maintenance side, like a succulent. Change out your desk chair for something a little prettier, once again, run this by your boss. Decorative and stylish storage – down to the paper clip holder.

Hi All!

Lighting can have an affect on your mood, it can transform the atmosphere of a space and it can add varying elements to the overall design – to name just a few. The kitchen is one of the most important rooms in your home to select the right lighting. It is a space in the home that gets the most use with different tasks at different times of the day. Of course, you have cooking, but there is also eating, entertaining and displaying to think about. So, layered lighting is crucial.

Recessed can lights with dimmers for overall lighting. They should be placed in front of the upper cabinets for optimal task lighting so they don’t cast a shadow when you are standing at the counter.  Stylish pendants for kitchen islands not only give great light but can add an element of color or flair depending on the look you want.  Another layer to consider is under cabinet lighting to lighten hard to reach spaces, it is also a great feature for simple accent lighting at night with the other lights turned off.  And last is interior cabinet accent lighting for any glass doors.  This will showcase your favorite china collection or collectibles. And don’t forget the dimmers! This always give you the ability to soften the lighting depending on your needs or the event.

Here are a couple of  great examples of layered lighting from our portfolio – recessed ceiling lights, decorative yet functional pendants, display lighting, and of course, natural lighting.
